A Mining Company called Mindoro Nickel launches a health campaign to give back to the local community.

Mindoro Nickel actively supports the Barangay Villa Cerveza community clinic that serves the needs of local residents – both Mangyans and Tagalogs. For 2009, the community clinic was able to provide free consultations on 16,000 cases and the provision of basic medical prescriptions and supplies.

For Mangyans, the primary health concerns continue to be pneumonia, amoebiasis, upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), urinary tract infections (UTI), infectious diarrhea, fatigue, anemia, influenza, vertigo, bronchial asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, vitamin deficiency and parasitism.

These ailments afflicting Mangyans are often recurring due to irregular nutrition, constant exposure to pulmonary tuberculosis, poor hygiene, exposure to the elements and the difficulty of providing regular clinic services due to their highly dispersed settlements. The health concerns of Mangyans are a complex problem because of their lifestyle, culture and poverty situation. Many Mangyans still depend on slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting and gathering or foraging.

For non-Mangyan residents within and adjacent to the tenement area, health concerns include influenza, fatigue, allergies, URTI, UTI, infectious diarrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, dental disorfers, anemia, headaches, pulmonary tuberculosis, emphysema and diabetes.
